Wasn't the practice of letting the speculators lead us around by the nose proven to be an expensive policy?

Of course I am not demonizing investors or speculators. However haven't they been spoiled under previous administrations? Isn't what we're seeing right now in terms of the economy the result of telling them 'no' and watching them hold their breath to punish us? Won't we all benefit from a little tough love?
